Tank vs. tankless water heaters

Conventional water heaters use tanks to store heated water, which is then supplied as needed. Tankless water heaters do not have storage tanks and instead instantly heat water to provide constant, on-demand hot water. It is helpful to fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of these systems.

Tankless water heaters can offer the following benefits:

  • They are more energy efficient
  • They provide an endless amount of hot water
  • They last longer than conventional water heaters

However, tankless water heaters have the following disadvantages:

  • They are more expensive than conventional water heaters
  • They are typically more difficult and more expensive to install

You need to weigh the professionals and cons of a tankless system to determine whether it is the right choice for your home.

According to the Department of Energy, a tankless water heater can be up to 34% more effective for homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water on a daily basis. For homes that use about 86 gallons of hot water a day, a tankless unit can be up to 14% more efficient. Depending on your hot water use, you could save about $100 or more on water heating costs by using a tankless unit. Tankless water heaters also have a life expectancy of about 20 years, as opposed to the 10-15 year life expectancy of conventional units.

Energy savings aside, you may be more interested in the benefit of having constant access to hot water. Instead of running out of hot water, which can happen with conventional water heaters, you can use as much hot water as you want without worry.
